The Website Foundations Every Medicare Agent Needs

Reading Time: 3 minutes

Ask ten Medicare agents what their website is for and most will say some version of “credibility.” That undersells it badly. Done right, your website is the hardest-working part of your practice: it answers questions at 9pm, captures the lead while your competitor sleeps, and quietly proves to every referral that you are the real thing. Done wrong, it is a brochure nobody reads. The difference is a handful of foundations that most agent websites simply skip.

What is the actual job of a Medicare agent’s website?

Short answer: to be found, to be believed, and to start conversations.

Every visitor arrives with one of three intentions: they are checking you out after a referral, they are researching a Medicare question, or they are actively looking for help. The site’s job is to serve all three: look professional enough to confirm the referral, answer the research question honestly, and make raising a hand effortless. Traffic without conversation is decoration.

Which foundations actually matter?

Short answer: identity, speed, mobile, clarity, and compliance. In that order of neglect.

  • Consistent identity. Your name, phone number, and service area should be identical on your website, your Google Business Profile, and every directory that mentions you. Inconsistency confuses both search engines and people.
  • Speed and mobile. Most beneficiaries and their adult children will open your site on a phone. If it loads slowly or renders badly, they are gone before your credentials load.
  • A clear next step on every page. A clickable phone number, a short form, a booking link. Every page should make contact obvious without being pushy.
  • Plain-language service pages. One page that says clearly who you help, where, and with what plan types beats ten pages of generic insurance copy.
  • Compliance built in. Required disclaimers present, marketing language that informs rather than pressures, and content that stays within the current CMS Medicare Communications and Marketing Guidelines. A site that cuts compliance corners is a liability wearing a nice theme.

Why do so many agent websites fail at this?

Short answer: they were built once, as a project, instead of run continuously, as a system.

The typical agent website was set up years ago by a generalist designer, hasn’t been updated since, and nobody owns it. Content goes stale, plugins go unpatched, and the phone number in the footer is the old one. Search engines notice neglect, and so do people. A website is not a purchase; it is an operation, like your book of business. It needs someone responsible for keeping it fast, current, secure, and accurate.

What should you check on your own site this week?

Short answer: run this five-minute audit.

  • Open your site on your phone. Does it load fast and read cleanly?
  • Can a visitor reach you in one tap from any page?
  • Is every fact current: phone, address, service area, plan types, disclaimers?
  • Search your name and your business name. Does what appears match your site?
  • Is there anything on the site you could not comfortably defend in a compliance review?

If any answer made you wince, you have found this month’s project.

Or you can hand the whole operation to a team that does nothing else.
